Reshma Khan, M.D.
Founder & Executive Director of Shifa Free Clinic
Dr. Reshma Khan is the Director of National Health Service of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) Relief and founder of the Shifa Clinic, a non-profit clinic that provides free medical care to those who do not have health insurance and cannot pay for services.
Dr. Khan's calling to serve others began when she was teaching her young children about the Islamic faith. At the time, she was not particularly religious, but she felt her connection to God growing as she taught. Her connection continued to grow as she served patients at Charleston's Veteran's Administration hospital. While she was at the VA, she felt God calling her to give more to people in need. She wanted to volunteer at free clinics where she could practice OB-GYN, but the existing free clinics only provided primary care. She became determined to open her own, though she had no funding and no collaborators.
During a pilgrimage to Mecca for the Hajj, she asked God to bless her clinic and create a place that would serve as a "portal of good." With the ICNA backing, Dr. Khan opened the Shifa Clinic on January 7, 2012. Today, the clinic provides OB-GYN services, dermatology, breast health, vision exams, dental exams, vaccinations, lab services, medication, food, and school supplies to families in the Lowcountry. In August of 2019, ICNA Relief hired her as National Director of Health Services to duplicate Charleston's clinic model to other states nationwide.
