Jan-Marie Joyce
Principal Violist of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra
Jan-Marie Joyce is Principal Violist of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and has held that position for 21 years. She is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied under Stanley Konopka, Assistant Principal Violist of the Cleveland Orchestra. Jan-Marie is a former Principal Violist of the Canton (OH) Symphony and has acted as Principal Viola in the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra in Colorado.
In the summer of 2005, she was invited to perform in Seattle Opera's production of Wagner's "Ring des Nibelungen." She is on the Charleston International Music School faculty, where she teaches private lessons, coaches chamber music and has been an adjunct faculty member at the College of Charleston.
Besides holding her principal position in the symphony, she enjoys teaching a full studio of viola students from the local Charleston community. Her students have attended top music conservatories and summer music festivals and attain top chairs in All-State and All-Region Orchestras each year.
