Hamlin Creek, Isle of Palms

Hamlin Creek Art

I am constantly taking photos. It is almost an obsession. It is not so much that I enjoy taking pictures (even though I do), as it is an amazing source of reference for my work in the studio.

I have a dear friend who invites me on morning walks at the beach every now and then. One of those mornings we walked all the way to Hamlin Creek, where IOP and Sullivan's meet. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of that intersection. There is something about boats and birds that just makes you feel relaxed. At that moment my biggest desire was that I had my sketchbook on me. But I guess sketching and exercising don't quite go well together, right? HA!

So, I took comfort in the fact that I had my phone and could take several reference pictures.

What I love most about this painting is that I mixed the use of brush for the background and worked heavily on my palette knife impasto on the water. It emphasizes the dramatic sky and the result was better than I expected.

I hope you all enjoy it! The original currently hangs in my living room, although it is available for purchase, as well as prints.
